What you should know about your summer camp’s transportation

Did you know that school buses provide one of the safest forms of transportation for a child? They do! In fact, transporting a child in a school bus driven by a professional school bus driver is over 100 times safer than being driven by a parent, bicycling, or walking to a destination.

There are clear reasons for this. School buses are built with safety in mind, and they are much heavier and expensive to produce than a typical passenger van. Even more important, school buses are driven by professional drivers, who are highly trained and must pass intensive written and behind the wheel tests.  These drivers transport passengers for a living, so safe driving for them is second nature.

It’s helpful to keep this in mind when deciding which camp to send your child to. Remember to ask the right questions. Does the camp use drivers who are college age, or does the camp use professional drivers that drive for a school year round? Does the camp use passenger vans, or do they use school buses that are stringently designed for safety in mind?

At Roughing It, we made the decision nine years ago to switch to professional drivers to handle the transportation of all of our campers to and from camp. All vehicles we use are 24-passenger school buses with seat belts. It’s been more than worth any additional cost. Not only do we find the safety of our campers has been approved, but most of our drivers come back year after year. They have now become an integral part of our camp community, thanks to the consistancy they provide to our bus routes and the joy they bring to our campers.
