Fishing Tips for February!

Fishing is not just a summer activity!  Certain kinds of fish are more active when it’s colder outside, so make sure your fishing license is up to date, grab your fishing pole, and head over to the Lafayette Reservoir!

In the winter, trout are the most active, because they like the colder weather.  The California Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the lake with fish, so check out their website to know when is the best time to go fishing.  Right after the lake gets stocked, the fish get a little stressed out, so it’s a good idea to wait a day before heading out.  Trout are more active in the early morning, so the earlier you get there the better.

Once you arrive, head over to the south end of the lake and try your luck from the docks.  When catching trout, the best kind of bait to use is either an inflated night crawler, powerbait, or a variety of different lures.  Powerbait is a type of dough bait that comes in a can and is used by rolling it into a ball around the hook.  It comes in a variety of  different colors, but chartreuse is the most popular.  One thing to remember is that trout have smaller mouths, so it’s a good idea to use a smaller hook.

Once you have your bait on your hook, you’re ready to fish!  Don’t forget to use your fishing voice so you don’t scare away the fish and good luck!
