Quality Staff Make Camp Great

A trademark of Roughing It has always been the exceptional all adult staff we hire to work at our camp each summer. We know that it is the counselors who MAKE the camp experience special for our campers. Our staff serve as positive role models for our campers, and create the nurturing environment that encourages and enables them to grow and flourish.

“I appreciate that Roughing It hires the best staff to be role models for my boys.”
Janice, mother of Kai and Arik (3rd year campers)

Claire spotlight

Staff Spotlight from Crafty Claire  – How  the Lessons I Learned at Camp help me succeed on SNL in NYC.

This summer I will be returning to Roughing It for my third summer as the crafts counselor! I am currently a junior at New York University studying a music performance degree in violin. When I am not in class I am usually practicing, crafting something for a friend, or drinking tea and listening to music. I am looking forward to travelling to Buenos Aires this March with a developmental psychology class I am currently enrolled in. We will be doing a cross-cultural exchange that will include observational research and humanities projects. This year I am also interning for the Music Department of Saturday Night Live! It is a very exciting atmosphere and although it is very different from working under the craft tree at the reservoir, there are some things that I have learned as the craft counselor that definitely helps me at SNL. Teaching crafts as taught me how to be flexible and turn any situation into a positive one. This flexibility goes a long way at SNL, especially when things don’t go quite as planned (which often happens with live TV!). Creativity, which is a major part of being crafty, is also crucial to being an intern at SNL because it allows me to see things in a different way and use the resources I have to come up with solutions quickly to meet the band’s needs (finding out how to get chipotle hot wings delivered at1amdefiantly requires my creativity). Working with campers has also taught me to be spontaneous, which allows me to go with the flow at work (which is a much needed skill in the chaotic atmosphere of the SNL studio). I am looking forward to returning for summer and crafting it up at camp!
