Swimming Program & Lessons

Learn to swim and develop your skill at Roughing It Day Camp.  For children 4 to 16 years old.

Our Swim Program

Roughing It Day Camp provides a comprehensive, lesson-based swim program that is part of our all-outdoor Day Camp Program.

Here our the key benefits:

  • 30 minute American Red Cross swim lessons taught three times a week
  • Beginning through advance instruction
  • Lifeguard certified instructors and ARC certified senior staff.
  • A shallow lap pool for beginners
  • Olympic and diving pool for advanced swimmers
  • Swim counselors use games and positive reinforcement to teach swim skills in a fun manner

Lessons are 30 minutes long and follow American Red Cross instruction. There is an additional 10 minutes each period for free swim and to practice skills on their own. Older campers can participate in an extended swim clinic period every Friday.

Swimming is an integral part of our Day Camp Program. Over the course of 2, 4 or 8-week sessions, campers have the time and ability to develop and perfect their swimming skills.

In addition to swimming, our Day Camp program includes a variety of outdoor activities, including: horseback riding (for 4 & 8 week sessions), fishing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, crafts, sports, adventure, outdoor skills, and environmental learning. Most of the camp day takes place at the beautiful Lafayette Reservoir, with 900 acres of open space to hike trails and explore.

Free Transportation & Extended Care

Our swimming program takes place at the Soda Aquatic Center at Campolindo High School, in Moraga.

We offer free transportation with 36 pick-up locations around the Bay Area to make getting to and from camp convenient and fun. We serve San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, Lamorinda, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and the Tri Valley, including Pleasanton.

Campers can sign up for extra swim lessons after camp, as part of our extended care CampPlus program.

A Community Where Kids Learn to Thrive

Roughing It Day Camp is more than a camp: it is a community where campers feel at home and have fun. For the whole day (9am to 3pm), campers are with the same group of children their age for the entire session, led by a group counselor who is always there to supervise, inspire, and help them grow.

Our program is fun and exciting for children, and gives them a chance to unplug, be outside, make friends, and learn life skills.

A Summer Tradition Since 1972

Generations of children have attended Roughing It since its founding in 1972 by Ann & Hobie Woods, who are still owners and directors to this day. Their daughter Amy is currently head director.

For many Roughing It has become a family – campers return year after year, grow up to become counselors, and even alumni bring their children to Roughing It.
