2022 Unit Two Staff

Meet our Unit Two Counselors and Staff

Sam Anderson

Unit 2 Leader, 7th Year Staff Member University of Colorado, Boulder — Journalism major Hi all! I am Sam, and I am returning for my 7th year at Roughing It Day Camp. I was a Boys 1st & 2nd-grade counselor for two summers and a Unit Leader for two previous summers. I grew up in Orinda, graduated from the University of Colorado, and have been working year-round at Roughing It for two years where I do marketing media content and videos. I love the fact that I can directly help campers and staff find the best in themselves at Roughing It.

Brian Kwong

B4 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
UC Santa Barbara — Environmental Science major

I am a college student about to finish my first year at UCSB. I am majoring in environmental science and love hiking, the outdoors, and learning more about the environment. I was a summer camp counselor for three summers at Lindsay Wildlife Experience, where we focused on arts and crafts along with active time outdoors to learn about the bay area’s unique environment and the animals and plants that make it up. That experience influenced me to choose my college major to be environmental science, and to also made me want to spend my summer outdoors working with kids at camp!

Tarik Parker

B4 Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member State University of New York, Postdam — International Relations major I am a 19-year-old college student, born and raised in New York City. I am in the Bay Area for the summer as my mother recently moved here (she is an associate dean at UC Berkeley). My grandparents are from the Caribbean and I have traveled to several countries.  One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned through working with neurodivergent children at my previous summer camp is that everybody has something unique to offer to a community, and that by seeing and emphasizing our positive differences, we can help bring out the best in each other.

Luci Thompson

G4 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Vassar College — Neuroscience and Behavior major

I grew up in Berkeley, Ca. At age 8, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which taught me a lot about empathy, resilience, and personal responsibility. In high school I discovered my passion of natural sciences, specifically neuroscience. I chose to go to college on the east coast to broaden my perspective of the world, but still have a deep love for California.  I attended a number of camps growing up, including Roughing It Day Camp’s Horse Camp.  I plan to use all my camp experience to help me be a successful counselor this summer at Roughing It.

UC Davis — Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology major

Hi, my name is Edgar and I am a recent graduate from UC Davis in Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology. I love spending my time outdoors hiking, kayaking, camping, and doing yoga. I have spent time as a soccer referee for three years and am a true kid at heart. I am also a certified EMT, and safety is always my number 1 priority! I had a blast spreading my knowledge about plants, animals, and conservation, and showing campers what it means to be a true wilderness explorer.

Tze Jet "TJ" Ong

B56 Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
UC Santa Barbara — Political Science major

My name is Tze Jet Ong, and  graduated from Pinole Valley High School in June. I immigrated to the United States in the summer of 2016, but I am also a native English speaker along with being able to speak Mandarin, Spanish, and I am currently learning French. My hobbies include reading philosophy, hiking, and lifting weights in the gym. I also love being in the outdoors for I feel an immense spiritual connection with nature, especially that of the sun for it awakens and calms the soul. I will be starting college at UC Santa Barbara this coming fall for I am striving to achieve my lifelong goal of becoming a lawyer before transitioning into American politics as a politician with the end goal of becoming Governor of California for I always had a keen interest of government, politics, and economics since a very young age.

Briac Poilane

B6 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
McGill University, Montreal  — Environmental Economics major

Hi my name is Briac Poilane and I am going to be a second year student at McGill university where I am studying environmental economics. I am French American, born and raised in San Francisco with my parents and 3 little brothers. As for hobbies and interests of mine, I enjoy skiing, running, photography, hiking, and music. This was my first year at Roughing It, but I have had plenty of experience from being in summer camps all my life. I have been interested in the environmental sciences for as long as I can remember and I believe it is an especially pertinent issue for my generation, hence my direction of study at McGill University and my intentions to forward this knowledge to the campers here at Roughing It.

Hello! My name is Allison Petek and I am 18 years old. I grew up in Orinda, CA and I just finished up my freshman year of college at UC Santa Barbara, studying a pre-law track. As a kid, I attended lots of day and overnight camps, and I remember how special and exciting camp-life always was. I love spending time with kids and being outdoors and would love to work as a camp counselor this summer. I have served as a junior counselor before at an overnight camp (Foothill Horizons Summer Camp), and I loved getting to connect with the campers in my dorm and help them navigate sleepaway camp for the first time.
