Programs for Younger Campers

Day Camp

Since 1972, Roughing It Day Camp has been providing a camp experience for young campers, ages 4 and up. Most of our youngest campers are ready and eager to participate in the full Roughing It Day Camp program. They have typically attended pre-school or school for nine months of the year, and are ready to enjoy being at camp for a four or eight-week session. They are active and want to be involved in everything Roughing It has to offer. Even our youngest campers participate in  nearly all activities offered at camp and lessons in the areas of swimming, horseback riding, boating, sports, craft (and many more) are based on age appropriateness and each campers' ability. All Roughing It day campers are invited to attend the all camp overnight which takes place once each session; As one camper parent said," We like the one-month sessions- they allow for continuity at camp and at home."

Little Raccoons

While most of our youngest campers are ready and eager to participate in the full Roughing It Day Camp program, some younger children may be hesitant about camp and all the activities offered. Some parents may want their younger child to have a shorter experience than the four week sessions and for these families, Little Raccoons is a good option. Little Raccoons is a modified camp program offering two-week sessions for young campers who are not sure about their readiness for the complete experience that  Roughing It Day Camp offers. Some of the more challenging activities such as horseback riding and the all camp overnight are not part of the Little Raccoons' schedule which allows for a more leisurely day. After participating in the Little Raccoons program, campers are typically ready to join the 4 or 8 week Roughing It Day Camp Program.

Day Camp Ages:
For ALL campers ages 4-16, with dedicated groups for preschool, pre-K, K and each grade level through High School.

Day Camp Session Length:
4-week or 8-week sessions

Little Raccoon Session Length:
2-week sessions

Day Camp, Camper Groups:
Campers are in camper groups based on their age, and grade, with dedicated groups for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten and each grade level beyond.  Learn more

There is one co-ed group for these younger campers.

Day Camp Transportation:
Door-to-door transportation in most areas

Little Raccoon Transportation:
Transportation from central bus stops

Day Camp Activities:
Day Campers participate in all camp activities specific to their age group, including horseback riding, swimming lessons, fishing, boating, crafts, sports, and the (optional) camp overnight.

Little Raccoon Activities:
Little Raccoons participate in nearly all camp activities specific to their age group including, swimming lessons, fishing, boating, crafts, and sports. Little Raccoons do not participate in horseback riding or the camp overnight.

Day Camp Sessions:
4 or 8 week sessions give younger campers more opportunities to learn new skills, make friends, and become familiar with the camp routine in a consistent environment.

Little Raccoon Sessions:
2-week sessions help ease campers into a new camp experience when unsure about the 4 or 8 week Day Camp Session. Little Raccoons are usually eager to sign up for 4 or 8 weeks the following summer.
