For parents: your children can attend Roughing It Day Camp for free (up to 8 weeks) when you work year-round and the complete summer. Camp tuition is valued at up to $9,000 per child.

Work Schedule
School-Year Season: This is a part-time job during the school year (non-summer months). A typical work schedule is Mon-Fri 10am-2pm (20 hours/week). We are flexible with creating a work schedule that takes into account your other commitments while remaining consistent week to week. Positions require constant communication with parents and staff, so hours should be scheduled during the work day.
Summer Season: Hours increase during the busy summer season, June 1st through Labor Day, to 30-40 hours/week. A typical summer work schedule is Mon-Fri 7am-4:30pm with 1/2 hour lunch.
Hybrid Work: Work virtually and in-person at our office during the school year. More in-person work can be expected at the start of the position to account for in-person training. The position is fully in-person during the summer season. Our offices are located in Lafayette with easy access from the freeway.

About the Part-Time HR Assistant Position
The HR Assistant will assist in all duties related to staff recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and human resources. HR Assistants communicate daily with both camp staff and camper families. The ideal candidate enjoys working on a variety of office projects and a fast-paced environment.
Job Responsibilities
Staff In-processing
- Process staff applications and employment forms
- Maintain and update staff databases for inquiries, applicants, and hired staff
- Assist staff through hiring and onboarding process
- Email communication with applicants and hired staff
- Schedule interviews and reference checks
- Update and send out employment forms needed for each staff.
- Coordinate and track staff onboarding and orientations
- Perform audits and ensure all employment forms are received, completed, and uploaded for all hired employees
- Monitor and ensure each employee is fully certified and current on all job requirements
- Produce database reports from camp databases
Staff Recruitment
- Post, maintain, and track job listings and advertisements
- Create staff recruitment media and E-Newsletters
- Establish contact with colleges and high schools to recruit staff
- Organize mass mailings
General Office Support
- Serves as camp receptionist and the friendly routing of all telephone communication
- Customer service: servicing camper families and prospective customers including daily communication (phone and email)
- Answer questions on customer accounts and assists families registering for camp.
- Scan, upload and organize files, and online record management
- General office upkeep: supply ordering, organization and upkeep of facilities
- Represents Roughing It at Open Houses and Community events.
- Assist sales, marketing, personnel, and other areas of the camp organization as needed.
- Occasionally drive between the summer office and reservoir to deliver or pick up supplies or transport staff as needed.
Ability to Master New Software and New Tasks
Most of the tasks for the Office Assistant can be easily mastered by individuals who are comfortable with computers and general office skills. Many of the skills can be learned on the job and applicants should not be discouraged from applying because they have not worked in a specific software program. All positions require a strong knowledge of Windows based programs and the ability to learn new computer software. Programs used in our office include:
- Microsoft Word
- Chrome
- Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird
- Microsoft Publisher
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
- ACT! and Hubspot (lead database programs)
- CampMinder (camper registration program)
- Camper Caboodle (camp blog and community website)
Other programs that are helpful but not mandatory:
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft Excel
- Adobe Acrobat
Specific Qualifications for HR Assistant
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Strong knowledge of Windows-based programs – MS Word, MS Outlook, Chrome
- Excellent phone and email communication skills
- Ability to obtain proficiency in ACT and CampMinder database management programs
- Ability to perform general office duties (filing, answering the phone, word processing, copying, mailing, organizing and running all the mechanics of the office)
- The ability to learn and master new programs quickly
- Valid driver’s license and excellent driving record. Will drive Roughing It vehicles on occasional errands.
- Ability to work independently and accurately
- Lift approximately 30 pounds (whether it be equipment, boxes, files, etc.)
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time (4-8 hours/day)
- Is able to walk a 1/4 mile up the hill from the Lafayette Reservoir parking lot to the large “East Field” of the Reservoir
- Can assist with special events outside (stand for extended periods at Open Houses and Community Fairs or be able to lead walking tours at the Lafayette Reservoir)
- Ability to comply with Roughing It policies and procedures, including but not limited to: Year-Round Staff Personnel Policies, Staff Covid Guidelines, Staff Dress Code.
- Must be comfortable and able to work around dogs
