Free Camp for Your Kids

For parents: your children can attend Roughing It Day Camp for free (up to 8 weeks) when you work year-round and the complete summer. Camp tuition is valued at up to $9,000 per child.

Work Schedule

School-Year Season: This is a part-time job during the school year (non-summer months). A typical work schedule is Mon-Fri 10am-2pm (20 hours/week). We are flexible with creating a work schedule that takes into account your other commitments while remaining consistent week to week. Positions require constant communication with parents and staff, so hours should be scheduled during the work day.

Summer Season: Hours increase during the busy summer season, June 1st through Labor Day, to 30-40 hours/week. A typical summer work schedule is Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm with 1/2 hour lunch.

Hybrid Work: Work virtually and in-person at our office during the school year. More in-person work can be expected at the start of the position to account for in-person training. The position is fully in-person during the summer season. Our offices are located in Lafayette with easy access from the freeway.

About the Camp Registrar Position

The Camp Registrar is a part-time, administrative assistant position and an integral member of Roughing It Day Camp’s year-round team. This person communicates daily with both camp families and staff.

Job Duties

  • Processing Registrations
    • Process camper registrations and forms.
    • Maintain the camper & customer databases, update records
    • Produce registration reports
  •  Account Management
    • Process payments, update customer accounts
    • Prepare customer financial statements and reports
    • Prepare bank deposits        
  • General Office Support
    • Serves as camp receptionist and the friendly routing of all telephone communication
    • Customer service: servicing camper families and prospective customers including daily communication (phone and email)
    • Answer questions on customer accounts and assists families registering for camp.
    • Scan, upload and organize files, and online record management
    • General office upkeep: supply ordering, organization and upkeep of facilities
    • Represents Roughing It at Open Houses and Community events.
    • Assist sales, marketing, personnel, and other areas of the camp organization as needed.

Ability to Master New Software and New Tasks

Most of the tasks for the Registrar can be easily mastered by individuals who are comfortable with computers and general office procedures. Many of the skills can be learned on the job and applicants should not be discouraged from applying because they have not worked in a specific software package. All positions require a strong knowledge of Windows based programs and the ability to learn new computer software. Programs used in our office include:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Google Chrome Browser
  • Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird
  • Microsoft Excel
  • ACT and Hubspot (lead database programs)
  • CampMinder (camper registration program)

Other programs that are helpful but are not mandatory are:

  • Microsoft Access
  • Adobe Acrobat & Photoshop Lightroom
  • Microsoft Publisher
  • Camp Blog & email newsletter programs

Specific Qualifications

  • Ability to work both virtually and in person at our camp offices during the school year and summer camp season (June – August).
  • Work in person in our camp office in Lafayette during the summer camp season.
  • The ability to quickly learn and master registration and database programs used at Roughing It for camper records and customer lead management.
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both writing and phone skills)
  • Ability to perform general office duties (answering inquires by email and phone, upload files, online record management, copying, mailing, organizing supplies and run all the mechanics of the office)
  • Strong knowledge of Windows-based programs – MS Word, MS Outlook, Chrome, Excel
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must be able to drive Roughing It vehicles on occasional errands.
  • College education (preferred)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of team.
  • Lift approximately 30 pounds (whether it be equipment, boxes, files, etc.)
  • Fine motor dexterity – typing, filing papers, etc.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time (4-8 hours/day)
  • Is able to walk up the hill from the Lafayette Reservoir parking lot to the large “East Field” of the Reservoir
  • Ability to walk 1 mile on both paved and varied terrain and trails at the Lafayette Reservoir in order to work camp events year-round and/or assist during the summer season.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs / hills to our office.
  • Can assist with special events outside (stand for extended periods at Open Houses and Community Fairs or be able to lead walking tours at the Lafayette Reservoir)
  • Ability to comply with Roughing It policies and procedures, including but not limited to: Year-Round Staff Personnel PoliciesStaff Covid Guidelines, Staff Dress Code.
  • Must be comfortable and able to work around dogs
