Full-Time Employment Salary Info

Salary, promotions, bonuses, and offers at Roughing It are based on a variety of factors and qualifications, the most important of which is successful previous employment with Roughing It Day Camp or another summer or recreational camp.

Please review the information below to understand the full-time salary information that best matches your experience. While we individually evaluate each applicant, we do not normally deviate from the salary progressions listed below. All promotions and bonuses are entirely at the discretion of the Roughing It Camp Directors.

We recognize that some applicants have additional, desirable qualifications which set them apart from other applicants. Although it is rare, we are willing to take certain qualifications into account for extra consideration.

Previous Roughing It Experience - One Summer

Have worked one summer at Roughing It as a Group Counselor or Program Head.

Prior to Summer Entry Salary: $11.50/hour 1 Month Promotion: $11.75/hour 3 Month Promotion: $12.00/hour
Summer – Full Season Commitment Salary: $550/week (50 hour schedule) Complete Summer Bonus: $300 Performance Bonus: $50 to $750
After Summer through October 1st Salary: $12.00/hour May take time off as leave (without pay)
After October 1st Possible promotion to Program Supervisor Salary: $35,200/year ($15/hour) This includes possible Complete Season, Camp, and Profit bonuses.

Previous Roughing It Experience - Two or More Summers

Have worked two or more summers at Roughing It, including one summer as an administrator. Qualifying administrative positions include: Unit Leader, CampPlus Director, Head Counselor, Program Director (not Program Head).

Prior to Summer Entry Salary: $14.00/hour 1 Month Promotion: $14.25/hour 3 Month Promotion: $14.50/hour
Summer – Full Season Commitment Salary: $600/week (50 hour schedule) Complete Summer Bonus: $500 Performance Bonus: $50 to $750
After Summer through October 1st Salary: $14.50/hour May take time off as leave (without pay)
After October 1st Possible promotion to Program Supervisor Salary: $35,200/year ($15/hour) This includes possible Complete Season, Camp, and Profit bonuses.

New to Roughing It - Experience as Camp Counselor

New to Roughing It but have some non-administrative experience in the camp/recreation industry.

Prior to Summer Entry Salary: $9.75/hour 1 Month Promotion: $10.00/hour 3 Month Promotion: $10.25/hour
Summer – Full Season Commitment Salary: $525/week (50 hour schedule) Complete Summer Bonus: $250 Performance Bonus: $50 to $500
After Summer through October 1st Salary: $10.50/hour May take time off as leave (without pay)
After October 1st Possible promotion to Program Supervisor Salary: $35,200/year ($15/hour) This includes possible Complete Season, Camp, and Profit bonuses.

New to Roughing It - Experience as Camp Administrator

New to Roughing It but have administrative experience as a paid program head (waterfront, riding, etc) in the camp/recreation industry:

  1. Responsible for setting up, taking down, and overall care of site, equipment, and supplie
  2. Responsible for total program: quality of teaching, skills learned, safety of campers, staff
  3. Supervision and evaluation of at least four paid adult staff members
  4. Camp/recreation season at least eight weeks in length and you and your staff supervised/taught at least 40 campers/day.

New to Roughing It - Experience as Camp Director

New to Roughing It but have exceptional experience in the camp/recreation industry, including Director at a Summer Camp with the following responsibilities:

  1. Opened/set up/closed the camp operations and site
  2. Oversaw all aspects of a camp with at least 30 campers/session
  3. Recruited campers and responsible for their welfare, parent relations, and overall program quality at the camp
  4. Camp season was at least six weeks long
  5. Recruited, hired/fired, trained and supervised staff of at least four adults
  6. Ordered all supplies and in charge of upkeep, care of site, supplies, and equipment

Additional, Beneficial Qualifications

The following qualifications are highly desirable at Roughing It Day Camp.  When taking these into account, we like to see a combination of several of the following:

  • American Camp Association certification of Standards Visitor
  • First Responder certifications
  • Advanced First Aid Qualifications (First Responder, EMT, Paramedic)
  • Instructor Certifications such as CHA for horseback riding, or WSI for water sports
  • Graduate Degree in Education, Recreation, or Business
