Internships at Roughing It Day Camp
Summer Internships
Many universities require students to complete an
internship as part of their course work. Roughing It has found many ways to tailor
our summer positions to accommodate these requirements, and have created
several opportunities for staff to fulfill their internship requirements while
working with us. Roughing It welcomes staff interested in completing internships
with our organization, and we are happy to work with and around the requirements
set forth by many academic departments and universities.
We offer both paid and unpaid internships to staff who can commit to working the
entire summer season. We have designed internships for students who are
returning staff to Roughing It as well as for students who have not previously
worked for our organization.
We prefer that all staff members interested in
completing an internship with us have done the appropriate research of
requirements and expectations placed on them by their academic department
and/or university. This effort helps us to better accommodate the needs of each
individual staff member and their internship program requirements. We also ask
that all perspective internship candidates submit all necessary paperwork to
Roughing It as soon as it becomes available, and must be submitted prior to
beginning work.
Roughing It's internship positions are modeled directly from the summer jobs we
offer. Since our camp curriculum is so diverse, we present a wide range of
employment opportunities, therefore are able to offer internships in a variety of
areas. All staff participating in an internship program must meet all requirements
and understand the standards Roughing It has for its employees. Those interested
in learning more about internship opportunities should

Year-Round Internships
We have developed a Year-Round internship program to
prepare future administrators for careers in camping, recreation, education and
youth leadership. Staff who have previously worked at Roughing It have preference
in these management internships, but the program is open to new applicants with
exceptional experience at other camps or youth programs. This program usually
requires an ongoing commitment to working at Roughing It, and generally offers two
full years of experience, including two or three summer seasons. Management
interns have the opportunity to work in a variety of positions during the summer
months and gain experience in marketing and personnel recruitment during the off-
season.

International Exchange Internships
Roughing It has cooperative agreements with
international organizations to provide staff for internships. Staff live with a host
family and provide recreational program leadership and program development
services in camp, children's and outdoor programs. Staff spend 3-9 months abroad
and receive a small salary. This program is open only to Roughing It staff who will
commit to returning to Roughing It during the summer after their international
internship.
