Our Herd of Camp Horses
Our herd of 24 horses all have gentle dispositions, and easily win the hearts of campers.

Aladdin
Aladdin is a bay Arabian and has been in our program since he was a yearling! He was named by a camper in our “Name Our Yearling” contest when he first joined Roughing It. Aladdin is great for all levels, so it’s no wonder he was voted Horse of the Session last summer and for many summers before! He loves jumping on the cross-country course.

Beetle
Beetle is a Bay Quarter horse with a star and one white sock. He is one of our veteran camp horses and loves teaching our beginners. Campers love his smooth gaits and willing personality. In his free time, he sometimes plays in his water trough.

Blaze
Blaze is a AQHA chestnut mare with blaze who is a pro at all sorts of ranch work. Along with trail rides, she was helped work cows and taught little kids to ride. Blaze joined us last month and can’t wait to help with riding lessons for all of our campers, from the youngest beginners to our most advanced riders!

Bucky
Bucky gets his name from his color, known as “buckskin,” and is a long time favorite for many campers. He is great for all levels, from beginners who are just learning to walk and trot to our most advanced riders who want to jump. He also loves trail rides!

Buddy
Buddy is an unusual color called a “red dun,” and is a recent addition to our herd! Buddy joined our herd in 2016, and loves teaching campers at all levels. In his free time, he loves hanging out with his friend Bucky!

Buttons
Buttons an AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) registered liver chestnut mare. She has been working as a camp horse almost her entire life! She was born at Lazy K and has produced many foals in her lifetime. After many years as a trail horse, she is excited for her debut with campers at Roughing It!

Chiquita
Chiquita is a flea-bitten gray mare, and has been in our herd for a long time. She is great for our beginner and intermediate riders, and has even been used as our vaulting horse! She loves to hang out with her best friend Sadie.

Cowgirl
Cowgirl is a chestnut mare with a blaze, and will be joining our herd in summer 2018! She’s looking forward to meeting everyone!

Cruiser
Cruiser is a chestnut gelding with a star, snip, and two white socks. He joined our herd in 2016, and came to us from the Stanford Equestrian Team! Before that, he was used as a search and rescue horse. He is great with our intermediate and advanced riders.

Daisy
Daisy is a brown and white paint Lazy K mare. She first joined our herd in 2016, and is slow and quiet for our beginner riders. She is a favorite with our youngest campers, and great at teaching riders how to steer.

Digger
Digger is a chestnut mare with a star and one white sock. She has been in our herd for a long time and is great with campers at all levels. She is a favorite for many campers, and loves spending time with her best friend May.

Energy
Energy is a new addition to our herd! She is a chestnut Lazy K mare with a star, snip, and two white socks. We leased her in 2017, and she is now returning as a permanent member! She was popular with campers of all ages and skill levels and loves going on trail rides.

Gus
Gus is a black and white paint gelding who joined our herd in 2016. He is no stranger to being a camp horse, and used to teach campers to ride at a different summer camp! He loves teaching campers to jump, and keep their hands low and still when they ride. He is a favorite up in Ring 3 and down at Horse Day Camp with our advanced riders.

Hayley
Hayley is an AQHA registered chestnut mare. 15 years ago, Jojo met Lazy K Hayley at Yosemite Trails Pack Station (YTPS). She was a young green filly starting her first summer at YTPS. By the end of that summer, she graduated to being a kids’ trail horse, almost unheard of! Since then, Hayley has spent her summers as a trail horse taking riders from all over the world, into Yosemite. She’s as sure footed and gentle as they come. She joined Jojo last fall as her lesson horse.

Heather
Heather is a black and white paint Lazy K mare, and a new addition to our herd! She is excited to start her new job as a camp horse, and is looking forward to meeting all the campers in summer 2018!

Lance
Lance is a large, bay, Warmblood gelding. He used to do the show circuits and jump 5ft jumps, but he retired and joined our herd in 2017. He is the biggest horse in our herd, and absolutely loves people. He is gentle and reliable, making him perfect for our beginners to learn on, and will also eagerly go over any jump for our advanced riders.

Matilda
Matilda is a palomino Haflinger pony. She is spunky and full of personality, making her a camper favorite. She has been voted horse of the session twice, and has been used as our vaulting horse. Her favorite pastime is to eat, and loves when campers bring her treats.

May
May is a chestnut mare with a blaze and two white socks. She is a long time camp horse, and great for riders at all levels. She is popular with our beginner and intermediate riders, and can often be seen spending time with her best friend Digger

Pearl
Pearl is the newest horse to join our Roughing It Day Camp herd this summer. Pearl is a Pinto mare, Lazy K quarter horse that we are leasing from Lazy K, where our horses spend their winters. She is gentle and sweet, with even gaits and good for all levels of riding ability.

Pickles
Pickles is a petite bay mare with a star. She joined us in 2017 as the youngest horse in our herd. She has a sweet personality and loves getting attention and treats from campers. Pickles went back to school this spring to fine-tune her lesson-giving abilities to help her reach her full potential as a camp horse! Her gentle nature and desire to please makes her a wonderful addition to our herd. When she returns this summer, she’ll be ready for beginner through advanced riders!

Rain
Rain is a strawberry roan mare with a black mane and tail. She is one of our veteran camp horses, and is great for riders at all levels. All campers love her smooth gaits and willingness to do whatever is asked of her.

Rooster
Rooster is a chestnut gelding with a blaze, and a seasoned camp veteran! He has been in our program for years, and is a camper favorite among all skill and age levels. He loves napping with the other horses in his free time, and eating horse treats. Campers love his smooth gaits, and many of our riders have learned to canter on him.

Sadie
Sadie is a tri-colored paint mare, and has been in our program for a long time. She is perfect at all levels, and a favorite for our beginner campers. She loves spending time with her best friend Chiquita.

Sally
Mustang Sally is a tri-colored paint mare, and joined our herd in 2016! She previously belonged to one of our alumni staff members, and now teaches our advanced riders the ins and outs of jumping, dressage, and cross country.
