Programs for Younger Campers
Roughing It provide two camp programs for young children: Day Camp and Little Raccoons.
|
Roughing It Programs for the young camper are tailored to meet the developmental
needs and abilities of children entering kindergarten through second grade.
Activities are designed so that these children will grow, succeed, and have fun
in the outdoors. |

Day Camp
Since 1972, Roughing It Day Camp has been providing a camp experience for
campers ages 4 - 7 years of age. Most younger children are ready and eager to participate in the full Roughing
It Day Camp program. They have attended pre-school or school for nine months of the
year, so they are ready to enjoy being at camp for a four-or eight-week session.
They are active and want to be involved in everything Roughing It has to offer.
Younger Roughing It Day campers participate in all the age appropriate activities
including horseback riding and canoeing (second grade and older) at waterfront.
All Roughing It Day campers are invited to attend the all camp overnight which
takes place once each session. As one camper parent said," We like the one-month
sessions-they allow for continuity at camp and at home."
|
Little Raccoons
Some younger children may be hesitant to go straight to the full Roughing It
Day Camp program. Some parents may want their younger child to have a shorter
experience than the four weeks needed for participation in Roughing It Day Camp.
For these families, Little Raccoons was started in 2002. Little Raccoons is
a modified camp program of two-week sessions for very young campers who
are not ready for the complete experience that the full Roughing It Day Camp offers.
Some of the more challenging activities such as horseback riding and the all
camp overnight are not a part of their schedule--to allow for a more leisurely
daily pace. After Little Raccoons, campers are ready to join the full
Roughing It Program.

4 and 8-week sessions give campers more time to adjust to their group,
become familiar the camp routine, and to relax and enjoy camp life.
|
2- weeks sessions can be an option for young children who are not sure about
coming to the full Day Camp. They may be more comfortable starting with this
introductory program.

Group Focus
Roughing It is a Group Centered camp for children. Campers develop group
living skills through living, working and playing together as a camper group.
Campers are grouped according to age, grade in the fall, level of
social development, and gender in the full Day Camp; and one co-ed group in
Little Raccoons. View our Group Focus page for more information.
All Adult Staff
The major reason for Roughing It's continued success at providing a safe,
supportive camp environment is our outstanding all adult staff.
We select staff because of their maturity, character, experience and
ability to relate to and inspire young children. Our overall camper to
counselor ratio is 4:1. View our Great Staff page for
more information.
Safety
The health and safety of each camper is the primary concern of each Roughing
It staff member.
Transportation
Transportation is provided to and from camp free of charge.
Home and central bus stops are available in Day Camp; and central bus stops are
available for Little Raccoons.
Schedules/Typical Day
Activities
Each camp day begins and ends as the whole camp assembles together for Opening
Circle and Closing Circle with announcements, singing, and skits. The
schedule for the rest of the day consists of less structured Group Time
planned by the group counselor, and fixed scheduled activities with formal
instruction for all ability levels taught by the program specialist staff.
The group counselor organizes Group Time so it is fun and
appropriate for their particular campers. Traditional camp games like
capture the flag, circle games, hiking, singing, lunch, quite activities
and rest time are enjoyed by campers with their friends in their own group.
The scheduled activities include Team Sports taught in a non-competitive manner;
Outdoor Education, creative nature Crafts, and Animal Care. At Waterfront,
all campers enjoy learning to fish and row. Campers going into second grade
and older (in Day Camp only) participate in canoeing. Our Swim Director
supervises the Swimming Program taught by our certified swim staff. Campers
who are ready participate in American Red Cross swim lessons; and we offer
our own water readiness program for the young non-swimmer. Day campers love
their own specifically designed Horseback Riding Program under the close
supervision of our adult riding staff.
