Dear Camp Families,
When we started our Camp in 1972 with 15 campers and a dream in our hearts, we had no idea we would be lucky enough to celebrate the 45th season! We feel fortunate to have touched the lives of thousands of children and see our campers grow up to become successful adults.
The Roughing It values are just as important today as we help children build the life skills needed to be happy, contributing citizens in the 21st century.
Updates for Summer 2017
As we open up the new season, we wanted to share what's in store for Summer 2017. These changes and improvements allow us to continue to provide a stellar all-outdoors camp experience for your child.
Camp Dates & New Session Options
We continue to offer 4 and 8-week sessions at Roughing It Day Camp. In addition, we are offering 3 and 7-week options for our second session to accommodate campers starting school August 14. Camp will start one week later to allow staff with late college finals to make our June 19th staff training week.
Camp Operations & Fees
This year we face the challenge of higher than usual operating expenses. We want to share the reasons for the tuition increase:
- Riding Expenses. Horses and riding have been an incredible and defining part of Roughing It for over 40 years. Last year, in order to continue the riding program, we purchased our camp horses. Owning and managing a herd of 25 horses is more expensive than when we were able to lease them prior to 2016. We are fortunate to have found a wonderful off-season home for our horses at Lazy K Ranch in Chowchilla; however, the costs for their year-round care have doubled this year. There is a great amount of work, expense, and expertise that goes into caring for and keeping a herd strong, healthy, and safe for children to ride. We plan to continue to grow our herd and care for our beloved older horses as they retire, since horses are such a special part of our camp.
- Transportation. We use First Student professional drivers and buses to provide the safest bus experience for our campers. This costs substantially more than using college-age staff as drivers; however, the quality and safety of our transportation is much improved. This summer, First Student will discontinue 24-passenger buses and replace them with new 20-passenger buses with improved, safer seating. It is an added expense for us to run additional routes to cover this change.
- Staff Salaries. We are raising staff salaries to match or exceed the increase in California minimum wage. We are committed to hiring the best adult counselors, as they are the ones who make camp special for our campers.
Smaller Groups for Roughing It Day Camp - Enroll Early
To allow for the optimal group experience, we are lowering group sizes to 12 campers for our Roughing It Day Camp program. The smaller group size gives an even more personal experience for each camper and offers better teaching and hands-on learning at our riding, swimming and waterfront programs. Enroll early to ensure your child's spot in their group.
Saddle Club is Back!
We are fine-tuning the Saddle Club schedule and plan to open registration for this much-loved after-camp program in January. Stay tuned for more details.
