General Horse Camp Information
Camper Grouping
Campers’ skills are evaluated on the first day of camp and they
placed into lesson groups based on their riding ability with other
riders with similar skills and experience. Our qualified staff
provides safe, fun and challenging instruction tailored to campers’
confidence, experience and skill level. We offer instruction for
beginner through advanced riders.
Staff
We pride ourselves in the
quality of our all-adult staff. Every member of our riding staff is
selected for their experience both as a youth leader and as a riding
instructor. All staff participate in a week long training before
camp starts and are CPR and 1st Aid trained and
certified. Our senior riding staff are Certified Horsemanship
Association instructors.

Transportation Information
Roughing It contracts with First Student for professional, reliable
and safe bus service. Transportation is included in our full day
programs- Roughing It Day Camp, Horse Day Camp and Ranch Day Camp.
Transportation Details
Certified Horsemanship Association Program
Roughing It uses the Certified Horsemanship Association CHA program
for our riding and horsemanship lessons. The CHA program
provides a clear progression to ensure safety, consistency and
appropriate challenges for riders of all levels. At Horse Day
Camp, our English riding program, campers can earn skills awards in
one of four CHA levels.

Our camp horses were
selected for their patient and gentle dispositions. With the
largest herd of camp horses in the Bay Area, we guarantee that every
camper will find a horse that they can love and learn from.

A True Camp Experience
Roughing It
combines the quality instruction of a riding school with the fun of
a real summer camp. Campers participate in fun theme days every
session, and participate in specialty activities unique to their
program:
Horse Day Camp
Horse show, cross country jumping, mock fox hunts, medieval jousting
and broomstick polo
Ranch Day Camp
Cow penning, lunch trail ride, Pony Express trail ride, horse
packing, and cowboy cookout
