What Being a Career Camp Professional
Involves
Employees in Professional Level careers at Roughing It are the senior
administrators who have the responsibility of planning, preparing,
and recruiting staff and campers for all Roughing It programs. These
employees work directly with the owner/directors in a wide variety
of activities to ensure that we provide the very highest level of camp program for
our campers. During the fall, winter, and spring, our career
professionals organize, develop, and market summer programs such as
our horse camps, Day Camp, and Camp Plus. During our very high paced
summer season, our administrators serve as supervisors and ensure
the success of the
programs.
Specific requirements associated with our
administrator positions are:
- Obtaining one or more Instructor Certifications
- Obtaining Advanced First Aid Certification (First Responder)
- 50-55 hour weeks during the summer season
- Willing to become active in the camping profession (American Camp Association)
- Participating in professional development courses
- Working at some weekend and evening camper/staff recruitment events during the school year (compensatory time off is provided)
- Becoming an American Camp Association Standards Visitor
- Attend various professional conferences and meetings
- Severely limiting vacation during the summer camp season
Summer Employment - The BEST Way to Qualify for Year-Round Positions
While not mandatory, the very best way to qualify for one of our career professional
level positions is to complete a summer on seasonal staff with
excellent staff performance evaluations. Ideally, candidates for
professional positions will have served in one of the more challenging
summer seasonal positions to demonstrate their leadership and
teaching skills. The following positions are those that
qualify for priority selection into our professional positions and
are listed in priority sequence:
- Day Camp Group Counselor (Junior High Group)
- Day Camp Group Counselor (other group)
- CampPlus Coordinator
- Transportation Coordinator
- Day Camp Riding Director
- Ranch Camp Director
- Horse Day Camp Director
- Waterfront or Swim Director
Additional Items That Are Especially Desirable for Career Candidates
The following items are especially desirable for applicants of the
Roughing It career positions and will afford applicants with additional preference:
- American Camp Association Standards Visitor
- Advanced First Aid Qualifications (First Responder, EMT, Paramedic)
- American Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor)
- Riding Instructor Certification (CHA, HAS, AHSA, USPC)
- Service as officer or on committee of American Camp Association
