RANCH CAMP POSITIONS

Ranch Camp Coordinator

The Ranch Camp Coordinator should have prior experience teaching and organizing riding lessons for children of all ages and abilities, and should have a familiarity with several kinds of farm animals. The coordinator would benefit from a previous knowledge of Roughing It's riding programs, and oversees RDC and the day camp trail riding program. This staff member must supervise staff, help RDC counselors plan their instructional curriculum, and will assist in managing and maintaining the Ranch Camp site. The RDC coordinator is required to complete written evaluations of staff and campers, and will be asked to accompany and supervise campers on bus routes for our day camp and camp plus programs as needed.

Assistant Ranch Camp Coordinator

The Assistant Ranch Camp Coordinator should have prior experience teaching and organizing riding lessons for children. This staff member is the director of Afternoon Ranch Camp, an introductory riding program. Campers who attend Afternoon Ranch Camp are generally very young, and usually have had very little, if any, exposure to horses and/or riding. The assistant coordinator is responsible for organizing and creating the entire riding curriculum for this program, and will also act as the chief instructor. S/he may be required to supervise staff in the absence of the Ranch Camp Coordinator, and assists in all areas of Ranch Camp. The assistant coordinator should be comfortable and prepared to teach lessons in any of the following areas: riding, trail riding, horsemanship, vaulting, and animal care activities. S/he will help to complete written evaluations of campers and staff, and will be asked to accompany and supervise campers on bus routes for our day camp and camp plus programs as needed.

Ranch Day Camp Counselors

Ranch Day Camp (RDC) Counselors should have previous experience working with children and must be successful leaders and positive role models. It is important that these counselors have a strong horseback riding background, and are comfortable enough with their own riding abilities, to be able to effectively teach campers basic, as well as more advanced riding skills and techniques. It is also helpful if these staff members have some knowledge of how to care for an array of farm animals. These counselors will work with goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, roosters, rabbits, and other small farm animals. RDC counselors spend their entire day with a group of 15 RDC campers, and are responsible for planning riding lessons, horsemanship activities, vaulting activities and lessons, animal care lessons, as well as other challenging ranch related activities. RDC counselors are responsible for supervising a group of campers, will be asked to accompany and supervise campers on bus routes for our day camp and camp plus programs as needed.

Ranch Camp Instructor: Animal Care

The Animal Care Instructor at Ranch Camp is responsible for creating an informational, hands-on animal care program, and will be teaching this curriculum to all of Roughing It's campers. The animals living at Ranch Camp include: rabbits, horses, goats, chickens, roosters, ducks, pigs, as well as some others. This instructor will also assist RDC Counselors in teaching and creating the curriculum for Ranch Day Camp. All instructors must be comfortable and prepared to teach lessons in any of the following areas: riding, trail riding, horsemanship, vaulting, animal care activities, etc. The animal care instructor should have a strong horseback riding background, and be very comfortable with his/her own riding abilities. This individual is also required to have a good knowledge of farm animals and how to care for them. Experience teaching riding lessons is helpful, and prior involvement in 4-H or other animal related programs is recommended.

Ranch Camp Instructor: Trail Leader

The Trail Leader at Ranch Camp is responsible for leading trail rides as well as creating lesson plans and planning activities that will teach skills necessary for safe, fun trail riding excursions. S/he will be required to become familiar with all trails on our 116 acre Ranch, and will also be asked to explore others in the Regional Park surrounding the Roughing It Ranch Camp Site. This instructor will also assist RDC Counselors in teaching and creating the curriculum for Ranch Day Camp. All instructors must be comfortable and prepared to teach lessons in any of the following areas: riding, trail riding, horsemanship, vaulting, animal care activities, etc. The trail leader should have a strong horseback riding background, and must be very comfortable with his/her own riding ability on trails. Experience teaching riding lessons and preparing lesson plans would be beneficial.

Ranch Hand

The Ranch Hand is part of the Roughing It support staff, and is responsible for many tasks at our riding sites. S/he is responsible for the overall maintenance of the Ranch Camp facility, and may be asked to complete minor repairs at our other riding sites as well. Duties of the ranch hand include, but are not limited to, tacking and un-tacking horses, shoveling manure, fence repairs and other site maintenance projects, as well as occasionally providing first aid to horses with minor wounds. The ranch hand may also be asked to assist Ranch Camp Counselors/Instructors with riding lessons, and will often co-lead trail riding excursions. It is helpful if the ranch hand is able to drive manual transmission vehicles, and also beneficial if s/he has had previous experience driving tractors and other farm equipment. A strong background in riding, horsemanship, and caring for horses and farm animals is recommended.

Groom

Roughing It hires a number of grooms, as part of support staff, to work at our riding sites. Grooms have the responsibility of feeding and grooming a herd of 30+ horses, and will be asked to tack and un-tack horses daily. It is expected, as part of daily duties, that grooms will shovel manure in all paddocks, arenas, and walking areas, and are in charge of keeping the entire riding site clean and well maintained. Grooms will occasionally be asked to provide first aid to horses with minor wounds, and may be asked to assist counselors in teaching riding lessons. It is recommended that applicants for the groom position are very comfortable around horses, and have a strong background in horsemanship and riding.

* Hours and work schedule can be flexible for this position, and may be paid hourly for part-time work commitments (less than 40 hours/week).  Bonuses are based on duration of commitment for the summer.

Horse Feeders

Horse Feeders are hired as part of support staff, and are responsible for feeding a herd of 30+ horses, on Saturday and Sunday mornings and evenings. These staff members may choose to work additional hours on weekend days in order to assist with site maintenance and manure control. Opportunities to work Monday-Friday, or various days, are also available. Horse Feeders should have a good knowledge of horses, and must be comfortable working alone, around a herd of horses.
