Opportunities for High School Students

Roughing It Day Camp offers special programs for High School Students. We are proud to assist our older campers in becoming strong, effective leaders, and have developed programs with these goals in mind. Our CILT and Junior Counselor programs give students the training, knowledge, and experience they need in order to become successful leaders and positive role models.

CILT Program

Students entering their freshman or sophomore year of High School can take part in our Campers In Leadership Training (CILT) program. CILTs attend Roughing It as campers, and spend each day with their CILT group and adult group counselor. They take part in all advanced teen activities offered especially for older campers, and they have the opportunity to develop leadership skills through leadership activity workshops and through hands on experience assisting camp counselors with younger Roughing It campers.

Junior Counselor Program

Students entering their junior or senior year of High School can become volunteer counselors by participating in our Junior Counselor (JC) program. Junior Counselors receive six days of advanced leadership and staff training along-side Roughing It's team of summer camp staff, and volunteer to work for a four or eight week session at camp. While at camp, under the guidance of adult staff members, JCs assist a camper group and are responsible for helping lead these younger campers in a variety of outdoor activities. Junior Counselors may earn community service credit for their contribution to camp, while gaining leadership skills that last a lifetime. Junior Counselors who do an exceptional job, and who dedicate 8 or more weeks to the program, become eligible to be hired early into Roughing It's paid assistant program staff positions.

Support Staff Opportunities

Graduating High School Seniors are eligible to apply for one of our paid Support Staff positions. All of Roughing It's paid staff must be at least 18 years old and have graduated from High School. Most of our staff are older, having completed one to two years of college.
