Staff Positions


HORSE DAY CAMP POSITIONS

Horse Day Camp Coordinator

The Horse Day Camp (HDC) Coordinator should have experience teaching and organizing riding lessons for children of all ages and abilities, and would benefit from a previous knowledge of Roughing It's riding program. It is the responsibility of the HDC coordinator to oversee the entire HDC riding program. This person must supervise staff, help HDC counselors plan their instructional curriculum, and assist in managing and maintaining the riding site. The HDC coordinator is also required to complete written evaluations of staff and campers, and will be asked to accompany and supervise campers on bus routes for our day camp and camp plus programs as needed.

  • Minimum age 21
  • ARC First Aid and CPR Certifications
  • Excellent Driving Record
  • Must attend Administrative Staff Training & Staff Training
  • CHA or HSA Certification recommended

Horse Day Camp Counselors

Horse Day Camp (HDC) Counselors should have previous experience working with children and must be successful leaders and positive role models. It is important that these counselors have a strong horseback riding background, and are comfortable enough with their own riding abilities, to be able to effectively teach campers basic, as well as more advanced riding skills and techniques. HDC counselors spend their entire day with a group of 15 HDC campers, and are responsible for planning riding lessons, horsemanship activities, vaulting activities and lessons, as well as other challenging horse related activities. HDC counselors are responsible for supervising a group of campers, and will be asked to accompany and supervise campers on bus routes for our day camp and camp plus programs as needed.

Horse Day Camp Instructors

Instructors at our Horse Day Camp (HDC) Program will assist HDC Counselors in teaching the curriculum for Horse Day Camp. These instructors should have a strong horseback riding background, and be very comfortable with their riding abilities. HDC Instructors will be responsible for helping to create lesson plans and teach riding lessons as well as other activities such as, horsemanship, vaulting, and cross country courses. Experience teaching riding lessons and creating beginner to advanced lesson plans is helpful.

Groom

Roughing It hires a number of grooms, as part of support staff, to work at our riding sites. Grooms have the responsibility of feeding and grooming a herd of 30+ horses, and will be asked to tack and un-tack horses daily. It is expected, as part of daily duties, that grooms will shovel manure in all paddocks, arenas, and walking areas, and are in charge of keeping the entire riding site clean and well maintained. Grooms will occasionally be asked to provide first aid to horses with minor wounds, and may be asked to assist counselors in teaching riding lessons. It is recommended that applicants for the groom position are very comfortable around horses, and have a strong background in horsemanship and riding.

* Hours and work schedule can be flexible for this position, and may be paid hourly for part-time work commitments (less than 40 hours/week).  Bonuses are based on duration of commitment for the summer.

Horse Feeders

Horse Feeders are hired as part of support staff, and are responsible for feeding a herd of 30+ horses, on Saturday and Sunday mornings and evenings. These staff members may choose to work additional hours on weekend days in order to assist with site maintenance and manure control. Opportunities to work Monday-Friday, or various days, are also available. Horse Feeders should have a good knowledge of horses, and must be comfortable working alone, around a herd of horses.
