Day Camp Swimming
|

Roughing It's
swim staff create fun lessons that help campers improve their swim skills
regardless of their level.
Water Readiness Program
Beginners and Non-swimmers take part in Roughing It's Water Readiness
Program, which helps kids gain confidence and learn basic water safety skills.
Through games, activities and one-on-one instruction, campers have fun in the
pool while preparing for more advanced ARC swim levels.

Teen Swim Program
Teen campers participate in
aquatic clinics geared for basic to advanced swimmers. Junior High groups and
CILTs (7th –10th graders) participate in aquatic clinics
geared for novice – advanced swimmers. This allows campers to specialize in the
activity of their choice and have the opportunity to learn new skills and try
more challenging activities. Click here to learn more about the Teen Swimming
Program.

The Roughing It Swim Program
Each camper group swims three times a week for
40 minute periods; 30 minutes of formal ARC lessons followed by 10
minutes of supervised free swim time. Campers are placed
in swim groups based on their ability after an evaluation by our
staff on the first day of camp. Campers receive instruction for
American Red Cross levels 1 – 6. (See American Red Cross Lessons &
Levels.)
Roughing It employs its own swim staff, who are
all certified lifeguards to teach all swim lessons and supervise
aquatic activities. Senior staff are ARC Water Safety Instructor
certified. Our swim program is located at the Soda Aquatic Center
in Moraga. We use a shallow lap pool for our beginner lessons, and
the Olympic size pool and diving pool for more advanced lessons.
Skill level instruction and age appropriate activities ensure
success for each child. The main emphasis of our swim program is
formal instruction for all ability levels taught in a fun manner.
Our staff uses games and positive reinforcement to teach skills in a
fun manner to help kids learn more effectively. On camp theme days,
the Swim Staff works hard to incorporate the theme into lessons and
activities at the pool.
Skill Level Evaluation
On the first day of camp, every camper will be
evaluated by our trained swim staff. Campers of equal swimming
ability will be placed into groups for swim lessons, enabling each
camper to improve their skills and gain confidence in the pool. The
Swim groups range from 1-6 campers in size, with one Roughing It
Swim Counselor. The campers will remain in the same group with the
same swim counselor for the duration of the session.
All campers receive a written evaluation from
their swim instructor at the end of the session. This shows the
specific skills of each level and the progress each camper has made
at swimming. Campers who successfully pass an American Red Cross
Skill level also receive their certification card.
You can get a copy of our swim levels and
camper evaluation by contacting our office or attending a Roughing
It Event.
